負け癖２

前回の続きです。

エディ(Eddie)はファッツとの対決に破れたあと若干のメンヘラ感のある恋人と

同棲したりしながら再戦のチャンスを伺っています。

ある日、ある酒場を訪れたエディはファッツとの闘いの最中に

「お前は負け犬だ」と言い放った賭博師のバート(Bert)と出会います。

そこでバートがエディに向けて語った言葉がこの映画の主張でありテーマであると

思います。

つまり、「人はなぜ負けるのか」

The Hustler "you're a born loser"

エディ(Eddie):E        バート(Bert):B

B: May I get personal ?

E: What have you been so far ?

B: Eddie, you are a born loser.

E: What is that supposed to mean ?

B: It was the first time I would ever seen Fats hooked, really hooked.

    But you let him off.

E: I got drunk.

B: Sure you did. You have the best excuse for losing. No trouble losing

    when you have a good excuse. But winning, that can be heavy on

   your back, too, like a monkey. You can drop that load with an  

   excuse. You have to learn to feel sorry for yourself. It is one of the

   best indoor sports, feeling sorry for yourself, and enjoyed by all.

   Espesially the born losers.

バ：一言いいか。

エ：今さら何だよ。

バ：エディ、お前は負け犬だ。

エ：どういう意味だ。

バ：あの時ファッツはあと一押しで奈落に落ちたのに、果たせなかった。

エ：酒のせいさ。

バ：弁解するつもりなら負けるのは容易い。

　　それに反して、勝つことは大変な重荷だ。だから人は口実を作って

　　重荷を降ろそうとする。そして悔恨の念に浸るのを楽しむんだ。

　　特に、負け犬はな。
